I ran an experiment. I collected 20 profile photos — 10 real professional headshots and 10 AI-generated ones. I mixed them up randomly and showed them to 50 people ranging from tech-savvy 20-somethings to people who still ask me 'what's an AI.' I asked one question: 'Is this photo real or AI-generated?' The results were not what I expected.

The test results

Overall accuracy: 54%. That's barely better than random guessing (50%). But here's where it gets interesting: the tech-savvy group scored 61% — better, but still far from perfect. The non-tech group scored 48% — worse than random. The most commonly misidentified photos were the LinkedIn-style AI headshots — they were marked as 'real' by 72% of respondents. The most easily spotted were heavily stylized avatars with glossy skin and unnatural symmetry.

What gave AI photos away

When people correctly identified AI photos, they pointed to: unnatural skin smoothness, eyes that looked slightly off, and lighting that was 'too perfect.' Interestingly, these tells were present in older-generation AI photos from 2023-2024. The 2026-generation AI headshots — especially the conservative, realistic styles — triggered far fewer red flags.

What this means for your profile picture

If you're worried about people knowing your LinkedIn photo is AI-generated: don't be. Most people can't tell, and the ones who can probably don't care. The social stigma around AI-enhanced photos is fading fast as the technology improves. The only people still getting called out are the ones using obvious, stylized avatars in professional contexts — and even then, it's less about 'AI bad' and more about 'wrong context.'
